Hong Kong - Philippines

The Philippines is Hong Kong’s 13th largest trading partner in the world, and its 5th largest in ASEAN. Total merchandise trade between the two economies in 2020 was USD 12.8 billion, a decrease of 6.2% over 2019. The average annual growth rate in bilateral trade between Hong Kong and the Philippines from 2016 to 2020 was 3.9%. In 2020, Hong Kong’s total exports to the Philippines decreased by 18.2% while imports from the Philippines decreased by 0.1%.

In September 2015, Hong Kong and the Philippines signed a Memorandum of Intent in Manila, pledging mutual co-operation on investment promotion exchanges and best practices. The document provides a platform for the two sides to exchange information on the investment environment and opportunities, encourage investors to set up businesses in the area of the other participant as well as support and facilitate mutual inward investment.

There are also frequent high-ranking visits between the two places. From Hong Kong, the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Edward Yau, visited Manila in November 2017. From the Philippines, President Rodrigo Duterte and then Secretary of Foreign Affairs Alan Peter Cayetano visited Hong Kong in May 2017 and December 2017 respectively.

In 2019, total visitor arrivals from the Philippines to Hong Kong amounted to 875 897, a decrease of 2.1% over 2018.
