Hong Kong - Malaysia

Malaysia is Hong Kong’s 7th largest trading partner in the world, and its 2nd largest in ASEAN. Total merchandise trade between the two economies in 2020 was USD 25.3 billion, a decrease of 0.1% over 2019. The average annual growth rate in bilateral trade between Hong Kong and Malaysia from 2016 to 2020 was 13.6%. In 2020, Hong Kong’s total exports to Malaysia decreased by 6.1% while imports from Malaysia grew by 1.2%.

In 2012, Hong Kong and Malaysia signed an agreement for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income.

Closer ties are also underscored by high-ranking visits. From Hong Kong, the then Secretary for Justice, Mr Rimsky Yuen and the then Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, Professor KC Chan visited Malaysia in November 2017 and November 2016 respectively. Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Edward Yau visited Malaysia in November 2019. From Malaysia, then Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi visited Hong Kong in November 2017.

In 2019, total visitor arrivals from Malaysia to Hong Kong amounted to around 392 500.
