Hong Kong - Indonesia

In 2021, Indonesia was Hong Kong's 23rd largest trading partner in the world and its 6th largest among the ten ASEAN countries. Bilateral trade in goods amounted to some HK$40 billion (or US$5.1 billion), representing a 26% increase over 2020. Since 2021, Hong Kong has also become the second largest source of Foreign Direct Investment in Indonesia.

In 2010, Hong Kong and Indonesia signed an agreement for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income. The agreement came in force in 2012. The ASEAN-Hong Kong Free Trade Agreement and the related Investment Agreement also entered into force in Indonesia in July 2020.

Closer ties are also underscored by bilateral visits by senior officials. At the highest level, Indonesian President Joko Widodo paid a visit to Hong Kong in May 2017. In April 2018, the then Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam, visited Jakarta and met with President Joko Widodo and a number of Ministers. The Financial Secretary, Mr Paul Chan, visited Jakarta in July 2017 and Bali in October 2018. The then Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah, and the then Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Dr Law Chi-kwong, also visited Jakarta in August 2018 and January 2019 respectively.
